Craft fair haul

craft fair fabric, originally uploaded by things to make and do.

Here is an overview of the fabric I bought at the craftfair on the weekend. My fav is the top left, a winter wonderland scene with houses, trees, snow, people skating and skiing. I also like the one at the bottom with the yellow and pink fish, it reminds me of Quentin Blake's illustrations.

ODD + EVEN

ODD + EVEN was a resounding success, above are some images of the with love stall and the general splendor of the market. Jess and Cat did a fantastic job, thank you both for all your hard work. The Long gallery (Salamanca) worked out well I think, good to be indoors where is was warm and dry. Everyone's stall looked ace, here are a few links to a few of the stall holders:
Lauren - Owlet
Cathy - Phat flats
Pip and Emma - In the afternoon
Nathanael - One tonne Graphic
Jemima - Cube Gallery

With love (Megan, Madeleine and myself) had a grand ol' time at the market, I think the best things about being involved in  a market is: hanging out with all the lovely crafty and designery people and to get feedback on the things we love to make from the people who love to look at (and sometimes buy) them.

After the market we watched Handmade Nation, which I think I'll have to do a full post about later, it was quite good.

Lovely blog awards

I couldn't be more excited! Thank you Pip from meet me at mikes for bestowing me with this lovely blog award!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stopped by, you are very much appreciated.

In turn here are my 15 current favourite blogs in no particular order. Most of these are bigguns (ie. you may have heard of them) but still gooduns in my humble opinion.

we feel fine - (not really a blog but I love it anyway)

my yearly pilgrimage

circle of colour, originally uploaded by sarah london textiles.

Going to the quilt and craft fair at the Derwent entertainment centre with my Mum is something I look forward to every year. Yes, it can be a bit kitsch, tacky and random, but hey, who doesn't need a bit of that in their lives. Among the rows of fat quarters, beads and yarn comes a sense of excitement and possibility. I enter into a fantasyland where I can both start and finish projects, know how to knit more then just stocking stitch and have giant wallet filled with money. The reality is, ofcourse, that I excitedly spend my measly craft fair budget on items which I either love too much to make into anything, or don't know how to.

No doubt I will fall into the same pattern this year, although, because I have ODD + EVEN the next day, maybe I wont get so carried away... who am I kidding, I love craft supplies.

Kris Sowersby - lovely type

I've just come home (via drinks) from a talk by Kris Sowersby, a New Zealand typographer brought to Tassie by AGDA (thanks AGDA). I enjoyed his talk immensely, not only is his work inspiring but he is a fantastic public speaker, and funny too! It's so refreshing to have a speaker who is relaxed and personable, many designers have the "too cool" gene.

Below is his typeface National, nice. (image via here)

In love with ... Helen Musselwhite (and paper-cuts)

Field Mice by Helen Musslewhite
Autumn Blackbird by Helen Musslewhite

mmmm, this is a bit nice! Helen Musselwhite from the UK makes beautiful imagery from paper-cuts. She says this about her work "My work has a distinctive hand crafted quality that pays respect to all forms of mid century design, folk and ethnic art, as well as current and future trends"

I'm a big fan of paper cuts having had a play with some myself in the past, here is one I prepared earlier. Also for your viewing pleasure, a few of the other beautiful artworks featured in the night window exhibition Stock, curated by myself and Meg Perkins for Living Artist week 2008.

ODD + EVEN winter market

ODD + EVEN winter market is coming up soon! Next weekend in-fact, Saturday 27th in the Long gallery, Salamanca. Come along and say hi! I'll be hanging out on the with love table, where we will have a grand selection of handmade items, vintage finds, home-wares, stationary and jewelry.

Enzo Mari, what a fantastic name (and puzzle)

Animali Wooden puzzle by Enzo Mari (image via here)

This may be another case of my eyes being bigger then my wallet when it comes to beautiful things for The Boy (who am I kidding, I want it for myself!). This is the Animali puzzle, designed by Enzo Mari in 1957, and it could be yours for a mere AU$670 (from inhabitat). The 16 animal pieces create a constructed tower or an intricate rectangular puzzle, I even love them as individual animals.

This is how Mari describes his work "elaborated or constructed in a way that corresponds entirely to the purpose or function". Wonderful

In love with ... Charlie Harper

I wanted to share some amazing illustrations by Charlie Harper. These are two of my favourites, Trumpeter Swan and Mocking Bird from the Ford Times collection, a Ford motor company publication in which Charlie Harper's artwork was featured throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.

"When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe." - Charlie Harper

Sweet - words and pictures

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes, originally uploaded by chockylit.

I could go one of these right now - ice cream cones filled with chocolate cupcakes and then iced, oh yes please!

not so sure about these!
Bacone - bacon cone filled with scrambled eggs, gravy and topped with a scone!

Both of these delicacies care of this is why you're fat, a hilarious (and somewhat scary) blog.

Evening conversation

me: it's so lovely to see you, how was your day?
blair: not too bad, I cannulated a man with terrible veins, drained someone's lung, diagnosed a lady with swine flu and generally saved lives*. How about you sweetie?
me: I made some tiny toadstools out of fimo and nail polish.

Granny day 22-28

I've been running a bit behind with photographing my grannies. So here is last week all at once! I decided to pick out the colours with my eyes closed, can you tell? I'm actually pretty happy with some of them, particularly the one on the bottom right hand corner, makes me think of carrot cake. Yum!

hope you are having a great long weekend!

Rain Rain go away

umbrellas, originally uploaded by things to make and do

It has rained non-stop for the last 2 days, so no morning walks for the boy and I. Here is a selection of lovely umbrellas as I sit here dreaming of the day (in the not too distant future) when the boy and I can stomp through puddles in our gumboots and brollies!

Misty mountain hop

This week so far has been a bit of "today is the first day of the rest of your life" scenario. The boy and I have been enjoying walking Blair to work each morning. It has been so cold, but I've really enjoyed watching the beautiful and colourful sunrise as we walk in, and the view of the mountain (obscured by mist today) as we wander home. This misty morning we even saw a few kookaburras enjoying a morning giggle.
